Cliff Jumping at South Point (Ka Lae), Hawaii

South Point Cliff Jumping

South Point, or Ka Lae, is located along the southern coast of the Big Island and is the southernmost point of the United States. Not only is it the southernmost point, but it is also the coolest point in the country.  The best part of South Point isn’t the point itself but rather the cliffs leading up to the point. If the water is calm, it’s one of the most incredible cliff jumping experiences in the entire country.  This is one of those spots where it feels like you are literally jumping off the edge of the world.

There’s no shortage of suitable jumping spots along the coast at South Point but, the main spot people jump from is next to some old boat hoists.  There is a ladder there that you can use to climb back up after jumping (although it’s a little bit easier to swim around the corner and climb up the rocks).  The height here is about 40 feet and the water depth is approximately 20 feet. Not only are the cliff’s jaw droppingly awesome, on a calm day the ocean below is crystal clear and an unreal shade of deep blue.  On the day that we went we were fortunate enough to not be met with any swell which left the ocean looking like glass.

Ocean conditions at the base of the cliffs can vary greatly.  There are strong ocean currents here and it can be very dangerous.  Do not jump if the waves are rough.  You could be quickly swept way out to sea.  If you are caught in the current and pulled out to sea it’s likely the next land you see will be southeast Asia.

There were two ways to climb out of the water after jumping. The first and most obvious way to climb out is the ladder that extends down into the water. The other way up is climbing up a broken section of cliffs using the broken rock fragments as leverage. We preferred this route to the ladder since the rocks didn’t move underneath you as you climbed. Be careful when pulling yourself out of the water though as you may accidentally put a hand or foot on an urchin while climbing out. We also saw several snowflake eels nestled along the cliffs so keep an eye out for them.

We arrived fairly late in the morning and were met by a near empty parking lot with only 3 other cars. The other cars all belonged to some guys who were fishing some ways away so we had plenty of space to jump.  The deep water and open cliff faces provided the rare opportunity of being able to jump out in any direction and not worry about landing on something dangerous.

Another awesome thing at South Point is the giant sea cave directly below the main jumping spot. It stretches back 40 feet into the cliff face and even has a rear access located halfway between the parking lot and cliff’s edge.  If you’re brave enough you can actually jump down through this opening and then swim out of the mouth of the cave. You should only do this if you are very confident in your ability to not jump into any rocks as the landing and jumping spaces are fairly narrow.

Once again, do not jump if you are not an experienced swimmer and cliff jumper.  Ocean currents and 40 foot high cliffs are a dangerous combination and I don’t recommend jumping unless you really know what you are doing.

South Point is an awesome, edge of the world experience.  Even if you don’t jump, it’s definitely a must see spot for anyone visiting Big Island.   Here’s a quick video we put together from the day.
