Camping on Old Rag Mountain

Old Rag Mountain is one of the most popular hikes in Virginia. We’ve already covered the hike itself HERE, but we wanted to do another post specifically about camping on the mountain. Even though there is a lot of interest in camping on Old Rag, legal camping areas in this section of Shenandoah National Park are extremely limited.

The first rule about camping on Old Rag is that you can’t camp anywhere above 2,800′ elevation. This shuts down any plans to camp anywhere near the rock scramble area. You’ll also need a Shenandoah National Park backcountry camping permit. The backcountry camping regulations and maps can be found on the Park Service website HERE.

There are also some camping opportunities along the nearby Nicholson Hollow Trail. You can access the Nicholson Hollow trail by parking at the usual Old Rag parking lot. The entrance to this trail passes through private property so make sure you’re within the park boundary when you start looking for a campsite. The boundary of the park will be clearly marked and is only about .2 miles in from the trailhead.
