Galveston Island State Park Camping

Recently the Realest Nature crew met up along the Gulf Coast of Texas for some kayak fishing and beach time.  We decided on Galveston Island and camped at the bayside campground inside Galveston Island State Park.  It was a very accessible campground and offered all the amenities we might need.  With the Galveston strip only a few minutes away by car, it was far from the usual backcountry camping that we do.  The campsite included a fire pit, a covered picnic table, a water spigot, parking for two vehicles, and nice bathroom/shower facilities.  There was also a steel pole with a hook on it to hang things from.  We used it to string up our hammocks.

The state park had great access to both the bay and the gulf.  The beach on the Gulf side was very nice and had some good waves while we were there.  The state park provided restrooms and showers right next to the beach access.  The warm water and waves were fun for swimming and tossing a football.  I’ll have to go back with the surf board the next time the waves are up.

We brought some Hobie kayaks with us and took them out fishing in the Gulf and the Bay.  Check out the fishing write up to see more details here!  The tricky part was getting through the surf without capsizing….it might have happened to a couple of us.

Camping in the state park was a great alternative to staying in a hotel.  We were able to enjoy the freedom of camping and saved a bunch of money.  Also, with the park being so close to the town, we were never far from any needed supplies.  It was $15 a night to stay in the bayside campground and $25 a night if you wanted to stay in the Gulf side campground.  If you’re interested in camping here, you can make reservations online here.  I would definitely recommend camping at Galveston Island State Park if anyone is planning a trip there in the future.
