Barton Springs Pool, Amazing Swimming Hole in Austin Texas

Nestled in the middle of Austin, Texas is one of the coolest swimming pools I’ve ever been to. Barton Springs Pool is an outdoor pool that is fed by none other than Barton Springs.  The pool was created by damming off a section of the creek and adding a cement perimeter to parts of the pool.  This is what makes the pool so cool to swim in.  It has a man-made perimeter, but the bottom and sides of the pool are composed of entirely natural bedrock.  So even though the outside is shaped like a rectangular pool, it is still a natural stream.  The spring water here is a beautiful crystal clear shade of blue.  It’s really cool to see such a natural and unpolluted environment in the middle of a city.

The land was given to Austin in 1918 by Andrew Zilker and the pool was then built by the city in 1920. Barton Springs Pool is open to the public with an admission fee of $3.00 for Austin residents and $8.00 for nonresidents. The pool is 3 acres in size. Because it is fed from a natural underground source it stays a cool 68 degree Fahrenheit all year long. During the weekdays the pool doesn’t get very crowded other than a few lap swimmers. If you plan on coming during the weekend expect a crowd, but don’t be discouraged. The park is large enough to comfortably host a decent sized crowd so even if the parking lot is packed you should still go and enjoy the cool waters of the pool.
