Austin City Bats

Every night at dusk in the warmer months under the Congress Avenue Bridge, up to 1.5 million bats pour out together into the Austin night sky.  They put on this show every night free of charge as they head to feast on Austin’s insects.  They form a seemingly endless stream during their exit that makes for a pretty incredible sight.  This display reminded me of the famous bats at Carlsbad caverns.

These bats are Mexican Free-Tailed Bats.  These bats are the most abundant mammal in North America. With a ground speed of over 99 mph some people claim they have the fastest horizontal speed of any animal.  They migrate south to Mexico and Southern Texas during the winter months to find warmer weather but return to Austin around April. The 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats living under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin form the largest urban community of bats in the world!

If you plan on photographing or taking videos of the Austin bats  we recommend standing almost directly underneath the bridge.  So when the bats fly out you can catch their silhouette against the dusk sky; without a lighter backdrop your camera will have a hard time picking up the small dark shapes of the bats as they zoom out from the bridge.
